Pakistani Parents Urge PM to Rescue Students Stranded in Bangladesh
In a distressing turn of events, the parents of Pakistani students stranded in Bangladesh have made an urgent appeal to Prime Minister for assistance. According to media reports, these students, enrolled in various medical colleges across Bangladesh, are currently confined within their hostels due to a deteriorating law and order situation in the country. The unrest has led to the imposition of curfews in several parts of Bangladesh, further complicating the students’ situation.
In a letter addressed to the Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister, the parents expressed their grave concerns. “Our children are trapped in their hostels with worsening security conditions. The Bangladeshi government has imposed curfews in many areas, and students have been evicted from their accommodations in Dhaka and other cities,” the letter stated. The parents requested immediate contact with all students, coordination with the Pakistani High Commissioner in Bangladesh, and swift arrangements for the students’ return home. They also stressed the need for food supplies and security arrangements for the students.
The unrest in Bangladesh stems from a student-led protest against the quota system in government jobs. In defiance of the curfew, students have staged rallies across various cities, leading to clashes with the authorities. The situation has escalated to the point where the military has been instructed to enforce the curfew with a shoot-on-sight order, though this directive has not been fully executed. In some areas, demonstrators have even forced military vehicles to retreat by pelting them with stones.
In light of the escalating violence, students from neighboring countries like India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar have already begun returning home. Over a thousand Indian students have reached Kolkata, and hundreds of students from Nepal and Bhutan have exited Bangladesh through the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya, many using private taxis to reach the border.
