Pakistan Launches Space Applications and Research Center in Gilgit-Baltistan to Combat Climate Change
Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) inaugurated the Space Applications and Research Center (SPARC-GB) in Gilgit-Baltistan, marking a significant advancement in the region’s response to climate-induced challenges. The inauguration ceremony was attended by researchers, scientists, students, and notable officials, including Chief Minister Gulbar Khan, who served as the chief guest.
SPARC-GB represents Pakistan’s first dedicated space research facility in the northern region and aims to address pressing environmental and socio-economic issues. According to Suparco’s statement, the center will focus on critical challenges such as climate change, glacier melt, and water resource management, positioning itself as a key player in monitoring natural disasters and safeguarding biodiversity in the area.
Suparco Chairman Muhammad Yousuf Khan emphasized the significance of SPARC-GB as a hub for advanced research and innovation, highlighting its potential to create employment opportunities and foster community development. He pointed out the urgent need for enhanced local capacity to tackle climate change challenges, noting that satellite-based monitoring capabilities would be significantly improved with the operational launch of SPARC-GB.
Chief Minister Gulbar Khan recognized the center’s vital role in addressing climate change, particularly the alarming rates of glacier melting that threaten local water resources and communities. He stated that SPARC-GB aims to deliver crucial data on glacier monitoring, landslide risks, and unpredictable weather patterns, enhancing the resilience and safety of local inhabitants.
Khan highlighted the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters, including landslides, floods, and earthquakes, and stressed the necessity for advanced monitoring systems. He urged officials to collaborate closely with Suparco to integrate space technology into regional development efforts.
In collaboration with the Gilgit-Baltistan government and international research organizations, SPARC-GB will provide technological assistance in disaster management, ecological conservation, and socio-economic development. Additionally, as part of Suparco’s Space Education and Awareness Drive, the center plans to inspire young minds through dynamic programs and research opportunities, positioning itself as a beacon of scientific excellence and contributing to advancements in both local and global space technology.
