A recent global study has revealed that nearly one-third of oral cancer cases worldwide can be attributed to the consumption of tobacco and betel nut. Published in The Lancet Oncology, the research highlights the serious health risks posed by these widely consumed products.

In 2022 alone, 120,000 individuals were diagnosed with oral cancer directly linked to tobacco chewing and betel nut usage. According to Dr. Harriet Rumgay, a scientist at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, these products are available in various forms across the globe and have been tied to multiple serious health conditions, including oral cancer.

Dr. Rumgay further emphasized that these findings should prompt healthcare institutions to implement preventive strategies aimed at reducing the use of tobacco and betel nut products. These measures could alleviate the significant burden on healthcare systems and help prevent countless cases of cancer.
