No Mediation Offers Yet Amid Rising Pakistan-India Tensions, FO

In a firm response to growing tensions with India, Pakistan’s Foreign Office warned on Thursday that any unilateral attempt by India to block water under the Indus Waters Treaty would be considered an act of war. FO spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan emphasized that such an action would gravely threaten regional peace and violate international norms.
Speaking during the weekly media briefing, Khan said, “Our stance on the Indus Waters Treaty is crystal clear. It’s a matter concerning the lives of 250 million Pakistanis. If India blocks water, Pakistan will respond forcefully.”
He added that Pakistan is a responsible state but will not compromise on its national security or territorial integrity. “Pakistan’s armed forces are fully prepared to safeguard our sovereignty.”
Pakistan has also taken a series of countermeasures, including:
-
Suspension of all trade with India
-
Closure of Pakistani airspace to Indian flights
-
Suspension of all SAARC-related visas for Indian citizens (except for Sikh pilgrims)
-
Halted cross-border movement at the Wagah border
Commenting on the controversial Waqf Bill and rising religious extremism in India, Khan said the human rights situation in India, especially concerning minorities, is deeply concerning and has been raised at international forums.
Despite rising tensions, visas for Sikh yatrees have not been revoked, reflecting Pakistan’s commitment to religious harmony.
Khan also confirmed Pakistan remains in active contact with friendly nations like Türkiye, the UAE, and others but has not received any offer for mediation from the international community.
He further criticized India’s transnational activities and reiterated Pakistan’s stance against terrorism while maintaining its commitment to peace and diplomacy.
