NDMA Warns of Rains and Flood Threats, Medium Flood Persists at Kotri
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a fresh alert forecasting rainfall in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and the upper catchments of the Indus and Kabul rivers over the next 24 hours. The warning highlights a potential flood threat to low-lying areas.
According to the NDMA spokesperson, a medium flood continues at Kotri Barrage, with water flow recorded at nearly 400,000 cusecs. Authorities expect the situation to persist until the end of September, keeping surrounding areas at risk.
Meanwhile, water levels are gradually decreasing at Guddu and Sukkur Barrages, where conditions are returning to normal. The NDMA also reported a decline in water flow at Ganda Singh Wala in the Ravi River, although low-level floods persist at Sulemanki and Islam Barrages.
The NDMA emphasized that its National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) is monitoring the situation round the clock, with close coordination with provincial and district administrations. Citizens have been strongly advised to avoid traveling to flood-prone regions or attempting to cross flood relays. Relief camp residents have also been instructed not to return home until official clearance is given.
Authorities further stated that awareness messages are being issued to ensure timely response and safeguard public lives and property.
