NASA Finds Mars Had Multiple Habitable Episodes in Jezero Crater
NASA’s Perseverance rover has uncovered compelling evidence that Mars experienced multiple episodes of liquid water, creating environments that may have been habitable on more than one occasion.
Scientists studying Jezero Crater found over two dozen minerals showing volcanic rocks were chemically transformed by water into salts and clays. These changes occurred during three distinct episodes: one with acidic, high-temperature water; another under moderate, neutral conditions; and a third with low-temperature alkaline waters—conditions considered highly favorable for life.
According to Eleanor Moreland of Rice University, the findings suggest Mars had several separate windows in its history when habitable environments could have supported life. This discovery strengthens the possibility that Mars was once more than just a barren world.
