Meta Initiates Layoffs Across Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reality Labs Amid Restructuring

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has begun laying off employees across multiple divisions, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reality Labs, according to a report by The Verge. The job cuts are part of Meta’s ongoing effort to align with its long-term strategic goals and location strategy.

A Meta spokesperson confirmed that certain teams were making changes, which included relocating employees to different roles and locations. While the spokesperson did not provide an exact number of layoffs, the company emphasized that they are working to find other opportunities for affected employees.

In a separate development, the Financial Times reported that Meta recently terminated two dozen employees in Los Angeles for misusing daily meal credits for non-work-related purchases, including wine glasses and household items. These terminations are distinct from the broader team restructuring currently underway.

Meta has been cutting jobs since November 2022, reducing its workforce by around 21,000 employees as CEO Mark Zuckerberg pushes for greater operational efficiency. This year, dubbed the “Year of Efficiency” by Zuckerberg, has seen Meta’s stock surge by over 60%, boosted by strong second-quarter results and promising revenue forecasts.
