Massive Financial Losses and Arrests, Punjab Submits May 9 Incident Report to Supreme Court
The Punjab Government has disclosed in a comprehensive report submitted to the Supreme Court that the province incurred a loss of Rs190.7 million during the May 9, 2023 incidents. These events, characterized by violent protests and attacks on public infrastructure, affected 38 districts across the province.
According to the report, Lahore alone witnessed damages worth Rs110 million, Rawalpindi suffered losses of Rs20.6 million, and Mianwali recorded damage amounting to Rs50 million. The destruction included both public and private properties, significantly straining provincial resources.
The legal representative for Punjab told the court that the events were not ordinary protests or political rallies, but a coordinated assault on state institutions.
The report further revealed that a total of 319 FIRs were registered across Punjab. Out of 35,962 individuals accused, 11,367 have been arrested, while 24,595 remain at large. Authorities continue their search to apprehend the remaining suspects.
This submission aims to aid judicial oversight and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice under the rule of law.
