Legendary Pakistani Athlete Captain Muhammad Younis Passes Away at 77

The Athletics Federation of Pakistan has announced the passing of Captain Muhammad Younis, a legendary athlete who won 27 gold medals for Pakistan on the international stage, at the age of 77. Younis was celebrated for his outstanding performances in the 800m and 1500m events, with an exceptional career that included his gold medal victory in the 1500m race at the 1974 Asian Games in Iran. He also secured silver medals for Pakistan in the 1970 and 1978 Asian Games.

Younis’s achievements extended to the 1973 Asian Track and Field Championship, where he won a gold and silver medal for Pakistan, cementing his position as one of the country’s top athletes. Notably, the records he set in the 1970s, particularly in the 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m races, have remained unbroken to this day, a testament to his exceptional skill and endurance.

In 1979, a tragic accident abruptly ended Younis’s athletic career, yet his contributions to Pakistan’s sports history continue to inspire. The Government of Pakistan honored him with the Pride of Performance Award in 1991.
