Barbara Taylor Bradford, celebrated author of A Woman of Substance, has passed away at 91. Known as “the grande dame of blockbusters,” she died peacefully at her home on Sunday, surrounded by her loved ones after a short illness.
Born in Leeds in 1933, Barbara’s journey from a Yorkshire Evening Post typist to a global literary sensation is a tale of inspiration. Her debut novel, A Woman of Substance, published in 1979, sold over 30 million copies, setting the stage for a prolific career that included 40 novels and adaptations starring icons like Liam Neeson and Anthony Hopkins.
Barbara’s warmth and resilience never faltered despite her monumental success. She was remembered fondly by friends and collaborators, including Jenny Seagrove, who called her “a powerhouse of glamour and warmth.”
