Lawyer Killed During Bangladesh Protests Over Hindu Leader’s Arrest
Bangladesh’s port city of Chittagong witnessed heightened security and tension following the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a Hindu leader associated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Das was detained at Dhaka airport on sedition charges, sparking protests in Dhaka and Chittagong.
Clashes between security forces and Das’s supporters resulted in the tragic killing of a Muslim lawyer outside Chittagong’s court. Police have arrested six suspects, identified through video footage, in connection with the killing and detained 21 others for vandalism and assault. Among the detainees were members of the Awami League, reportedly found with improvised explosives.
India has expressed concern over attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, urging justice for minority communities. Meanwhile, the interim Bangladeshi government has ordered an investigation into the lawyer’s death while asserting its commitment to judicial independence.
