Lahore’s Air Quality Hits Hazardous Levels, Securing Title as World’s Most Polluted City

Once known for its green landscapes and rich, breathable air, Lahore has now become a case study of environmental degradation, transforming from the “City of Gardens” to the world’s most polluted urban center. On Saturday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) for Lahore soared to an alarming 1,000+, with the upscale Defence Housing Authority (DHA) district recording an AQI of 1,853—the highest in the city. Liberty Chowk followed closely with an AQI of 1,208, while Shimla Hill registered a staggering 1,007.

The hazardous smog engulfing Lahore has caused serious health concerns, with environmental experts advising residents to take maximum precautions, including limiting outdoor exposure and wearing protective masks. As Lahore grapples with this recurring smog crisis, the city’s air pollution crisis is highlighting the urgent need for policy intervention and regional cooperation to control emissions.
