Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Passes Resolutions for Imran Khan’s Release, Opposes PTI Ban
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly passed several significant resolutions, including one demanding the release of former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, and others opposing a proposed ban on PTI, the appointment of ad hoc judges to the Supreme Court, and actions of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
During the assembly session chaired by Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, Law Minister Aftab Alam presented a resolution for the release of Imran Khan. The resolution cited a report by the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) Human Rights Committee, which stated that the cases against Imran Khan and his companions violated international laws. The resolution emphasized that Khan, who is 71 years old, had been sentenced to around 60 years in prison, and demanded the implementation of the UN report for his release. The resolution passed with a majority vote.
In another significant resolution, the Provincial Law Minister addressed the potential ban on PTI, highlighting a recent Supreme Court decision that recognized PTI as the largest political party in Pakistan. The resolution argued that imposing a ban on PTI would violate Article 17 of the Constitution and stated that PTI would challenge such a decision in court and among the public.
The Law Minister also criticized the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in another resolution, accusing it of failing to conduct transparent elections and alleging that it had supported the caretaker government beyond its mandated term. The resolution demanded the resignation of ECP members by July 20, failing which the Supreme Court would be approached for action.
