Kat Torres Sentenced to 8 Years for Human Trafficking and Slavery

Kat Torres, a former Brazilian model and fitness influencer based in the US, has been found guilty of human trafficking and slavery, leading to an 8-year prison sentence. The investigation into Torres began in 2022 after two women who lived with her were reported missing.

Torres was convicted of trafficking and enslaving one of these women. Additionally, accusations have been brought against her in connection with another woman, according to the BBC World Service. Since then, more victims have come forward, claiming that Torres trafficked and sold them into slavery.

Torres, once associated with Hollywood celebrity Leonardo DiCaprio, attracted victims with her story of transformation from a poor Brazilian neighborhood to a luxurious lifestyle surrounded by stars. Ana, one of the victims, recounted how she was drawn to Torres’ Instagram profile in 2017, seeing her as a symbol of hope. Torres’ emphasis on spirituality further impressed her followers.

Recently, Torres released her autobiography, A Voz (The Voice), in which she claimed to have supernatural abilities. Her wellness website offered videos on self-help, hypnosis, meditation, fitness, and guidance on relationships, health, and economic success. For an additional $150, clients could have private video sessions with Torres, who promised to solve their problems.

Amanda, another former client, told the BBC that Torres made her feel special and involved in all her decisions. However, Ana, Amanda, and other former followers later realized they were becoming isolated from their loved ones and increasingly dependent on Torres’ directives.
