Justice Tariq Jahangiri Challenges SHC Ruling on Degree Cancellation in Supreme Court

Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri has challenged the Sindh High Court’s (SHC) decision declaring his LLB degree invalid, arguing that the order was passed unilaterally without giving him a chance to be heard. In his petition before the Supreme Court, Justice Jahangiri requested that the SHC’s September 25 ruling be declared null and void.
The petition maintains that the SHC not only rejected his request to become a party in the proceedings but also ignored the question of the petition’s maintainability. It further stated that the ruling violated principles of natural justice as the affected party was not allowed to present arguments or seek legal counsel.
This case follows months of controversy after Karachi University’s syndicate formally cancelled Jahangiri’s 1991 law degree, citing discrepancies found by its Unfair Means Committee. Justice Jahangiri, however, alleges that the degree cancellation is “malicious” and linked to his earlier stance against interference in the judiciary.
The Supreme Court has already restored his judicial powers after striking down the Islamabad High Court’s interim order that had suspended him. Now, the apex court will hear whether SHC’s ruling against his degree holds legal ground.
