Israel has carried out fresh airstrikes in northern Gaza, killing at least two people, even after announcing the resumption of a fragile ceasefire.
According to Al-Shifa Hospital, Israeli jets struck Beit Lahiya on Wednesday evening, targeting what the Israeli army claimed was a “weapons storage site.” Palestinian officials, however, said civilians were among the casualties.
The strikes came just a day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered massive retaliation in Rafah, killing over 100 Palestinians, mostly women and children, in what Gaza’s Health Ministry called one of the bloodiest nights since October.
Despite declaring the operation over and promising to “resume the ceasefire,” Israel launched another wave of attacks, prompting global outrage.
The United Nations condemned the killings, calling them “appalling.” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said many victims were children and urged both parties not to let peace “slip away.” Similar appeals came from the UK, Germany, and the EU.
Hamas denied involvement in the Rafah incident that killed an Israeli soldier and accused Israel of violating the ceasefire. The group warned that further attacks could obstruct humanitarian operations and the recovery of bodies.
