Indian IT Engineer Arrested in Qatar Over Espionage Charges

Qatari authorities have arrested an Indian IT engineer, Amit Gupta, on allegations of data theft and espionage. Reports suggest that Gupta, a senior executive at Tech Mahindra, has been in the custody of Qatar’s state security for the past three months.
Gupta is accused of spying for foreign entities and stealing sensitive data. His arrest has sparked diplomatic concerns, especially as his parents have been denied permission to meet him. The Qatari government has provided no official statement on the matter, heightening speculation over the severity of the case.
BJP MP Hemang Joshi confirmed that Gupta’s parents traveled to Qatar in an attempt to meet their son but were turned away by the authorities.
This is not the first instance of Indian nationals facing espionage charges in Qatar. In 2022, eight former Indian Navy officers were sentenced to death for allegedly spying for Israel. They were later pardoned and released in February 2024 by the Emir of Qatar.
As the case unfolds, diplomatic channels between India and Qatar are expected to engage in high-level discussions to address the situation.
