Medical experts have raised serious concerns about the alarming rate of hair loss among Pakistanis, revealing that nearly 70 percent of individuals up to middle age are affected by baldness. Speaking at a seminar in Islamabad, the Hair Transplant Society of Pakistan (HTSP) disclosed that over 30 million people across the country are currently experiencing some form of hair loss.

The growing demand for hair transplants has exposed a significant gap in the healthcare infrastructure. Currently, Pakistan has only about 150 qualified hair transplant surgeons, while the estimated need stands at over 5,000. To bridge this gap, HTSP announced a nationwide initiative to train 1,000 new surgeons in the field.

Dr. Rana Irfan, President of HTSP, shared statistics indicating the extent of the problem: “In Pakistan, 20% begin losing hair in their 20s, 40% in their 40s, 50% in their 50s, and up to 70% by their 60s.”

Experts further stressed that baldness is not exclusive to men. Women, too, are increasingly suffering from hair loss due to genetics, diseases such as typhoid, and rising stress levels. Hair transplant specialist Dr. Jawad Jahangir noted that both maternal and paternal genetics play a key role in hair loss, but many cases could be prevented with proper medical care and early intervention.

HTSP also warned the public about the dangers of seeking treatment from unqualified practitioners, which has led to a rise in medical malpractice cases. The Society’s effort to build a certified workforce aims to ensure safer and more reliable treatment for patients.
