Government Initiates Right Sizing of Federal IT Ministry to Enhance Efficiency

In a significant move to enhance efficiency and reduce dependence on federal funding, the federal government’s Right Sizing Committee has put forth comprehensive recommendations for restructuring the Ministry of Information Technology (IT). These changes are set to impact several institutions within the Ministry.

One of the major steps includes the closure of the Telecom Foundation, with its subsidiaries slated for privatization. This move aims to streamline operations and reduce financial burdens on the federal government. A substantial restructuring of the National IT Board has also been recommended. This includes establishing partnerships with private service providers to enhance efficiency through an external model, ensuring better service delivery.

The committee has highlighted the need for the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) to become financially autonomous. It has recommended increasing the board’s income to Rs 1 billion, reducing its reliance on federal government support and encouraging self-sustainability. In addition to these measures, the committee has directed the continuation of services for the Virtual University, Universal Service Fund, and the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). However, it stressed that the Ignite initiative must address its failures and continue its efforts to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the tech sector.

The Right Sizing Committee has urged the Ministry of IT to implement these recommendations promptly to ensure the effective functioning of its subordinate institutions and overall improvement in service delivery.
