FBR Rules Out Further Extension for Tax Return Deadline, Penalties to Apply for Late Filers
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) announced on Thursday that there would be no further extensions to the income tax return filing deadline, which is set to expire today, October 31. After extending the deadline twice already, the FBR emphasized that taxpayers must file their returns by midnight.
To date, over 5.01 million income tax returns have been filed, generating more than Rs125 billion in tax revenue. Starting November 1, individuals who miss the deadline will face double taxation on vehicle and property purchases and may experience additional penalties, including restrictions on international travel, potential disconnection of mobile phone SIM cards, and even suspension of electricity and gas services.
FBR officials clarified that individuals with monthly earnings of Rs50,000 or more are legally required to file income tax returns. Failure to do so will result in their classification as non-filers, with corresponding penalties applied.
The deadline extensions were previously granted on October 14 and September 30, responding to requests from trade organizations and tax associations and in consideration of bank holidays. However, this will be the final deadline, according to the FBR.
