A recent study led by Dr. Helen Keyes, a cognitive psychologist and head of the School of Psychology and Sport Science at Anglia Ruskin University, has revealed the positive effects of engaging in arts and crafts on mental health and overall well-being. The findings were published in Frontiers in Public Health.

The research utilized data from the UK’s national Taking Part survey, analyzing responses from 7,182 participants to assess how creative hobbies contribute to life satisfaction. Remarkably, over 37% of respondents reported having participated in a craft activity over the past year.

Results indicated that those involved in creative activities, such as knitting and drawing, experienced heightened levels of happiness and life satisfaction. However, the study suggests that further research is necessary to fully understand the role of creativity in reducing anxiety and loneliness.

Dr. Frank Clark, a psychiatrist with Prisma Health, emphasized the mental health benefits of engaging in creative activities, noting that they can foster self-esteem and alleviate stress.

The researchers advocate for governments and health services to promote arts and crafts as a viable means of improving public health. Dr. Keyes highlighted that engaging with creative hobbies offers an accessible, low-cost solution for enhancing mental resilience. Whether through adult coloring books or trying a new craft, these activities allow individuals to reconnect with their inner artist and find tranquility in the creative process.
