The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a revised application to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for an increase in electricity prices by Rs. 2.63 per unit. The hearing on this application is set to take place today at the NEPRA headquarters.

This proposed hike is based on the fuel price adjustment for the month of June. Initially, the CPPA had requested an increase of Rs. 2.10 per unit. According to the application, 35.13% of electricity was generated from hydropower, 11.06% from local coal, 1.95% from furnace oil, and 8.66% from local gas. Additionally, 18.10% of electricity was generated from imported LNG, while 14.85% came from nuclear fuel.

The CPPA’s request underscores the varied sources of electricity generation in Pakistan and the impact of fluctuating fuel prices on overall electricity costs. If approved, this increase will add to the financial burden on consumers already grappling with high utility bills and economic challenges.

The decision by NEPRA will be closely watched as it will affect the cost of living for millions of Pakistanis. The adjustment in fuel prices is a critical factor in the determination of electricity tariffs, reflecting the ongoing volatility in the global energy markets.
