Diesel Prices Likely to Surge Amid Inflation; Decision Due on December 31

The start of the new year could bring another financial burden for the public, as diesel prices are expected to increase by over Rs4 per litre. Kerosene, too, might see a slight rise of Rs1 per litre, according to sources within the Petroleum Division.

While petrol prices are expected to remain unchanged, the potential increase in diesel costs is attributed to adjustments in global oil markets and domestic fiscal requirements.

The final decision will be announced on December 31, following consultations between the finance minister and the prime minister. “The adjustment in petroleum prices will be made public after the prime minister’s approval,” said an insider.

This anticipated hike could add to the woes of inflation-stricken citizens, as increased diesel prices often lead to higher transportation costs and commodity prices.
