Demand for Donkey Skins in China Causes Price Surge in Pakistan

In an unexpected twist, the price of donkeys in Pakistan has surged due to rising demand from China, where donkey skins are used in the production of cosmetics and traditional medicines. The price of donkeys has climbed to as high as PKR 300,000, significantly affecting donkey cart operators in cities like Karachi.

According to local reports, China uses donkey hides for producing a popular facial cream and a medicinal product called “Ejiao.” Every year, millions of donkeys are slaughtered for this purpose, creating a surge in demand for the animal. In Pakistan, where donkeys are often used for manual labor, particularly in urban areas like Karachi, the skyrocketing prices are causing significant financial strain on those who rely on donkeys for their livelihood.

Donkey cart drivers, who previously could purchase an animal for PKR 8,000 to 12,000, now face prices between PKR 30,000 and 35,000. The rising costs are making it harder for these workers to sustain their businesses, with many lamenting the impact on their daily earnings.

Weekly donkey markets in areas like Karachi’s Lyari are now seeing fewer local buyers due to these price hikes. Sellers attribute the inflation to China’s increasing demand, as they export donkey hides for cosmetic and medicinal purposes.
