Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said Pakistan accepted peace talks with the Afghan Taliban at the request of brotherly countries, but issued a stern warning that Islamabad will not tolerate threats or attacks on its territory. Speaking after inconclusive Istanbul talks, he accused some Taliban officials of internal discord and deception, and said their hostile rhetoric masks weakness.

Asif stressed that Pakistan does not need to use its full force to eliminate the Taliban, but added that if required the state can defeat the regime in strongholds — citing places like Tora Bora as examples — sending a message to the world. He said it is regrettable that the Taliban appear intent on preserving their rule and wartime economy by dragging Afghanistan into renewed conflict.

Referring to the narrative of Afghanistan as the “graveyard of empires,” the minister clarified that Pakistan never claims to be an empire, but warned militants who profit from regional instability that they have misjudged Pakistani resolve and capability. He said any terrorist or suicide attack on Pakistani soil will be met with a severe and bitter response.

Asif urged the Taliban leadership to consider their consequences, warning that testing Pakistan’s determination would be costly. He reiterated Pakistan’s preference for peace while leaving no doubt about the country’s readiness to defend its sovereignty.
