Deadly Beach Bomb Attack in Somalia Leaves 32 Dead and 63 Injured
At least 32 people have been killed and 63 others injured following a terrorist bomb attack at a popular beach in Mogadishu late Friday night. The explosion occurred as visitors were swimming and enjoying the resort, turning a night of leisure into a scene of chaos and horror.
Social media footage captured the aftermath of the attack, showing victims’ bodies scattered on the beach while terrified bystanders fled for safety. According to the police, one attacker detonated the bomb, causing the initial explosion. Security forces quickly responded, killing three additional attackers and apprehending a fourth alive.
The former Prime Minister of Somalia, Hassan Ali Khaire, expressed his deep condolences to the victims’ families and condemned the attack. He noted that the timing of the attack during a busy night at the beach underscores the terrorists’ hostility towards the Somali people.
The al Qaeda-affiliated group al Shabaab, known for its history of violent attacks in Somalia, is believed to be behind this tragic incident. Although the group has been pushed back significantly by recent government counteroffensives, it continues to pose a serious threat, capable of executing substantial assaults on government, commercial, and military targets.
This attack highlights the ongoing struggle in Somalia to combat terrorism and ensure the safety of its citizens. The Somali government, with support from international allies, remains committed to eradicating the threat posed by al Shabaab and restoring peace and stability to the region.
