Chicken Prices Soar Past Rs600 Per Kg, Citizens Demand Relief

The price of chicken has skyrocketed across Punjab, exceeding Rs600 per kilogramme in major cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, and Jhang. Middle-class families, already battling inflation, are now struggling to afford this essential protein source.
Poultry experts attribute the surge to increased demand during the wedding season, supply chain disruptions, and alleged manipulation by the poultry mafia. Retail prices, which were Rs380–450 per kilogramme two weeks ago, have risen sharply by Rs150 in just a week. In some areas like Jhang, prices have reached Rs650 per kilogramme.
Poultry farmers cite a threefold increase in chick costs, now Rs220 each, as a key driver of the price hike. Delays in chick supply, lasting up to 20 days, have further exacerbated the issue. Meanwhile, retailers complain about the government-fixed price of Rs590 per kilogramme, stating it is impossible to sell at that rate given high farm costs.
Citizens have called on the government to act immediately to curb the prices and address alleged market manipulation. “If this continues, affordable protein will remain out of reach for the poor,” said a frustrated shopper.
