Book Review on “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee
Review by: Khoban Muneer
Harper Lee’s To “Kill a Mockingbird” is a powerful novel that tells the story of a young girl named Scout Finch growing up in the racially divided town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the 1930s. The book is narrated by Scout, who shares her experiences with her brother Jem and their father, Atticus Finch, a lawyer who stands up for what is right.
The main plot revolves around Atticus defending Tom Robinson, a Black man accused of harassing a White woman. This trial reveals the entrenched racism in their community and shows how unfairly people can be treated based on the color of their skin. Atticus teaches Scout and Jem valuable and important lessons about empathy and justice, telling them to “climb into another person’s skin and walk around in it.” This advice really stuck with me because it emphasizes the importance of understanding others’ feelings.
Scout’s perspective as a child makes the story even more engaging. She is curious and sometimes naive, which allows readers to see the world through her innocent eyes.
The characters are well-developed, from the mysterious Boo Radley, who becomes a symbol of kindness to Calpurnia, their housekeeper, who teaches them about the Black community. Each character adds depth to the story and helps convey its important messages.
Harper Lee’s writing is easy to understand, yet it captures the emotions and struggles of the characters beautifully. The book is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, making it a compelling read.
In conclusion, To “Kill a Mockingbird” is a must-read for everyone, especially middle school students. It teaches valuable lessons about empathy, justice, and standing up for what is right. This novel remains relevant today, reminding us to fight against prejudice and to treat everyone with respect.
