India’s political landscape has been shaken once again after BJP’s senior leader and Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah made a shocking and derogatory statement against Muslim Indian Army officer Colonel Sophia Qureshi.

During a media interaction following Operation Sandur, Colonel Sophia had candidly acknowledged the damage caused by Pakistan’s military response. In reaction, Vijay Shah accused her of being the “sister of terrorists” and even went as far as saying, “Modi sent her in a military plane to help carry out attacks, and now our sisters are widows.”

This statement has been condemned across party lines. The Congress Party has demanded Vijay Shah’s immediate resignation, calling his words “hate speech aimed at dividing the country and disrespecting a patriotic officer.” Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated, “This is not just a personal attack on Colonel Sophia, it’s an attack on the dignity of every soldier who serves India with pride.”

Social media platforms have erupted with criticism, accusing the BJP of targeting Muslims and undermining the contributions of Muslim soldiers to deflect from their own military shortcomings.

Political analysts argue that BJP is reviving an old playbook of scapegoating minorities in moments of national embarrassment.
