Bananas: A Powerhouse of Fibre, Potassium, and Antioxidants

Bananas rank among the most consumed fruits worldwide, praised for their flavour, convenience, and health benefits. As a source of carbohydrates, they provide energy and essential B vitamins. When paired with protein or healthy fats, bananas help stabilize blood sugar levels.
A medium banana offers about 3 grams of fibre, including pectin that supports digestion, and resistant starch that acts as a prebiotic for gut health. With around 422 milligrams of potassium—roughly 9% of the daily requirement—bananas contribute to heart health and blood pressure control.
Additionally, bananas are rich in antioxidants, which research links to reduced risks of inflammation-related chronic diseases and certain cancers.
However, experts warn that individuals with chronic kidney disease should limit high-potassium foods such as bananas, as excessive intake may lead to hyperkalemia and related complications.
