Baluchistan Betrayed Again

In yet another tragic incident exposing the ongoing vulnerabilities in Baluchistan, the recent attack by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) underscores deep-seated systemic failures that can no longer be overlooked. Let’s face the harsh truth: the government, security forces, and intelligence agencies have once again let down the people of Baluchistan. The attack, carefully planned and devastatingly executed, reveals significant intelligence gaps, raising critical questions: Where exactly are our intelligence resources focused if not on preventing such repeated tragedies? Despite repeated assurances from authorities that insurgent groups have been weakened, the BLA and similar groups like BRAS, BLF, and BRA continue their operations with alarming freedom.

The government’s usual response offering vague promises of improved security is no longer enough. People have grown weary of hollow statements and demand concrete actions. It’s understandable that the citizens question the sincerity of the government’s assurances when insurgents continue to act with impunity. An equally concerning aspect is the economic injustice deeply rooted in the province, where the bulk of Baluchistan’s abundant resources and royalties remain in the hands of just three influential families. Such economic disparity creates an environment ripe for resentment, frustration, and insurgency, especially among communities suffering poverty and neglect.

The way forward requires more than military action. It demands genuine reform and equitable redistribution of resources. Ensuring local communities directly benefit from their region’s wealth is not just an act of fairness it’s crucial for lasting peace. Moreover, meaningful political reform is urgently required. The Pakistani government must commit to transparent and unrestricted elections, rigorously vetting candidates to ensure no links to insurgent groups. Importantly, the government must respect and uphold the results of these elections without interference.

Empowering local elected leaders to genuinely govern their province economically and politically is essential. Providing adequate federal funding and facilitating access to international development resources would demonstrate real commitment to improving life for the people of Baluchistan. The anger and frustration felt by the people across the province and the wider nation are understandable. Accountability must be taken seriously and urgently. Unless authorities address these shortcomings decisively, the latest attack by the BLA sadly risks becoming just another incident in a tragic, ongoing cycle of injustice and violence.
