Baby Born After 30 Years Revives Italy’s Cat-Dominated Village
In a rare and heartwarming event, an Italian village famous for having more cats than residents has celebrated the birth of its first child in 30 years, capturing international attention and symbolizing new hope for the fading community.
The village, Pigliara di Marzi, is located on the slopes of Mount Grifalco. Over the past several decades, many residents have left the area in search of better opportunities, leading to a steady decline in population and leaving the village largely silent and deserted.
Today, the narrow streets of Pigliara di Marzi are mostly occupied by cats. They roam freely through alleyways, enter homes without hesitation, and rest peacefully along the ancient stone walls built into the mountainside.
That long-standing silence was finally broken in March this year, when the village welcomed a newborn baby for the first time in three decades. The birth brought joy and renewed life to a place that had not witnessed such celebrations for years.
The baby girl, Lara Bussi Trabacco, is the first child born in the village in 30 years. Due to the absence of any recent births, Lara quickly became the center of attention for locals and visitors alike.
Lara’s mother said that people who had never even heard of the village are now visiting it because of her daughter. She added that at just nine months old, Lara has already become something of a local celebrity.
Residents hope that this historic birth may encourage families to return and help revive the village, turning a symbol of decline into a story of renewal.
