Apple Rejects iPhone 17 Pro ‘Scratchgate,’ Blames Faulty MagSafe Chargers

Apple has pushed back against growing concerns that the iPhone 17 Pro scratches too easily. Following viral photos of demo units showing scuffs around the MagSafe charging ring, users coined the term “scratchgate.”

In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple explained the blemishes were not actual scratches but residue left behind by damaged MagSafe stands in Apple Stores. The company said these marks can often be wiped away, and faulty chargers are being replaced.

Apple also addressed durability concerns regarding the raised camera plateau, noting its anodized finish is similar to previous iPhones and MacBook Pros. While tested for durability, the finish can still show normal wear over time.

Reviews remain divided. TechRadar praised the phone’s strong build, while a Cult of Mac reporter claimed demo unit marks “could not be wiped off” and were “definitely scratches.” Apple stressed that store display units face harsher handling than personal devices, which explains why they appear more worn.
