Abir Gulaal’ in Jeopardy, Fawad Khan’s Film Faces Ban After Pahalgam Attack

Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor’s much-anticipated film Abir Gulaal has become embroiled in a growing political and cultural storm following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK).

Just days after its music launch in Dubai, Saregama—the audio label behind the film—removed the film’s soundtrack from YouTube and streaming platforms, fearing backlash. The decision followed rising calls in India to boycott the film, citing its Pakistani lead and cross-border sensitivities.

Sources reveal that Indian entertainment regulatory bodies and several cinema chains refused to screen the film. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is reportedly denying release clearance altogether.

The situation has been further inflamed by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), which reiterated its ban on Pakistani talent, warning of disciplinary actions against any violators.

Abir Gulaal, directed by Aarti S Bagdi and produced by Vivek B. Agrawal, was originally scheduled for release on May 9. The future of the film now hangs in the balance.
