The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has intensified its efforts to curb illegal SIM activity by launching the second phase of its operation targeting SIMs registered on expired Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs). This move follows the successful first phase, which focused on blocking SIMs linked to fake and canceled CNICs.

According to a statement from the PTA, this latest phase targets SIMs registered on CNICs that expired before 2017. Since the operation’s commencement on August 16, more than 69,000 illegal SIMs have been blocked. The PTA has been utilizing data provided by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to identify and take action against these illegal registrations.

Looking ahead, the PTA has announced plans for a third phase, which will involve blocking SIMs registered in the names of deceased individuals. In the meantime, mobile phone users are being sent awareness messages, urging them to renew their CNICs to avoid disruption in service.

The PTA has also issued a stern warning about the dangers of fake SIMs, which are often used for criminal activities, including terrorism, financial fraud, and other illegal actions. Citizens are strongly advised to ensure their CNICs are up to date to prevent their SIMs from being blocked.

This crackdown is part of a broader effort to enhance security and prevent the misuse of SIM cards in the country. Earlier, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) blocked over 85,000 SIM cards belonging to non-compliant taxpayers. The FBR has been sharing data with the PTA to facilitate this process, and individuals who have paid their taxes and filed their returns have had their SIMs reactivated.
