In a troubling development during a national anti-polio vaccination campaign held from September 9 to 15, over 5,000 parents in Balochistan opted not to vaccinate their children against the polio virus. This refusal comes at a time when the province is grappling with a resurgence of polio cases, with 14 reported so far this year.

Health department sources revealed that the refusals have raised significant alarm among officials, particularly as the campaign aimed to bolster vaccination rates amidst ongoing health challenges. Districts most affected include Qila Abdullah, which has reported six cases, along with additional cases in Quetta, Chaman, Jhal Magsi, Zhob, Kharan, Dera Bugti, and Qila Saifullah. Tragically, three of the affected children have died, underscoring the critical nature of this health issue.

Officials have expressed deep concern regarding the implications of such refusals on public health, emphasizing the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of this debilitating disease. The Health Ministry is calling for increased efforts to raise awareness about the benefits of vaccination and to address the fears and misconceptions that lead to such refusals.
