The 26th Amendment to the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan officially became law on Monday, following President Asif Ali Zardari’s signature on the bill. This amendment had been the subject of considerable debate in the National Assembly and Senate, with both houses passing it late Sunday night after extensive wrangling between the treasury and opposition benches.

The bill was first approved by the Senate, with a majority vote in its favor, and later passed by the National Assembly, securing 225 votes. Following its approval, the prime minister signed the advice for presidential ratification, which was subsequently granted by President Zardari.

The 26th Amendment introduces several key changes to Pakistan’s legal framework, including judicial reforms, such as the restructuring of the Supreme Judicial Council, and establishing a fixed term for the Chief Justice of Pakistan. This historic reform is expected to streamline judicial appointments and enhance transparency in Pakistan’s legal system.

With the amendment now part of the Constitution, it marks a significant step towards improving the country’s governance structure and ensuring accountability within the judiciary.
