UAE Cancels EmSAT Exam for Grade 12, Updates University Admission Standards

UAE authorities have announced the immediate cancellation of the EmSAT exam for Grade 12 students, opting for updated criteria that prioritize subject-specific achievements, especially for medical and engineering programs. The Ministry of Education explained that university admissions will now focus on grades in key science subjects rather than the overall percentage, giving universities more flexibility in setting entry requirements. This change, according to the Ministry, is aimed at easing students’ transition to higher education while aligning admissions with students’ academic strengths.

UAE Minister of Education, Sarah Al Amiri, underscored the need for adaptable policies that place students’ interests at the forefront. “The flexibility of our educational policies stems from our absolute concern for the interests of our students,” she stated.

Additionally, universities will be able to enroll students in English proficiency courses if they do not initially meet language requirements, as well as offer remedial courses for students who need additional preparation in specific subjects. The Ministry also modified certificate equivalency requirements, now requiring academic records from the last three years and mandating Arabic and Islamic studies for Arab and Muslim students, respectively, in line with the UAE’s cultural values.

Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Awar, Acting Minister of Higher Education, highlighted that the revised approach will enhance accessibility to higher education, whether students pursue bachelor’s degrees, diplomas, or skill certifications. These updates come as part of a broader commitment to supporting UAE’s diverse student population and fostering seamless educational pathways.
