Pakistan has achieved a significant scientific milestone after Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) confirmed, for the first time, the presence of lithium in subsurface formation water (brine), marking a major development for the country's mineral resources and clean energy sector.
According to OGDCL, the discovery was made during advanced geochemical analysis of formation water obtained from a high-temperature geothermal well under the company's pilot geothermal program.
Officials said the concentration of lithium found is comparable to that of internationally recognized lithium-bearing geothermal brines, opening new possibilities for Pakistan's future mineral and energy industries.
OGDCL described the finding as the first scientific confirmation of lithium in Pakistan's geothermal brine, placing the country among nations exploring geothermal resources as a potential commercial source of lithium.
Experts say lithium has become one of the world's most strategic minerals due to its critical role in electric vehicle batteries, large-scale energy storage systems, renewable energy projects, and advanced technologies.
Industry specialists believe that if further exploration and commercial extraction prove successful, the discovery could significantly boost Pakistan's mining sector, industrial development, foreign investment, exports, and clean energy economy, while creating new opportunities in battery manufacturing and high-tech industries.
