Punjab Chief Minister Forms 29-Member Committee to Revitalize Film Industry
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched an ambitious plan to revive the film industry in Lahore, Pakistan’s historic filmmaking capital, by forming a 29-member steering committee. The committee will address challenges faced by artists, propose new infrastructure, and develop policies to attract investment and talent to the film sector.
Senior PML-N leader Senator Pervaiz Rashid will serve as the chief minister’s representative on the committee, with Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb appointed as convener. Other members include Information Minister Azma Bokhari, provincial secretaries of information, tourism, finance, and renowned figures from the film industry.
One of the committee’s primary objectives is to establish a comprehensive roadmap for developing a state-of-the-art film city, a modern film academy, and an advanced film lab. It will also focus on establishing the Punjab Film Fund and propose policies to support artists’ welfare, including health insurance, social security, and housing.
In addition to infrastructure, the committee will submit a set of recommendations within 15 days, prioritizing artistic expression centers and encouraging emerging talent. It will also suggest policies to increase the number of cinema houses in Punjab and offer incentives for film sector investors.
The official notification of the committee’s formation was issued by the chief minister’s principal secretary, emphasizing the government’s dedication to revitalizing the industry. This initiative, if successful, aims to reposition Lahore as the heart of Pakistan’s film industry.
