Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his commitment to enhancing cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh as he congratulated Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus on his recent appointment as the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government. Yunus, 84, took the oath of office on Thursday after returning from Paris, following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The appointment of Yunus, a globally recognized figure for his work in microfinance, comes at a critical time for Bangladesh. His selection followed a series of violent protests led by a student movement, which resulted in the tragic deaths of over 400 people, primarily young students, and ultimately forced Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee the country.

In a message posted on X, Prime Minister Sharif, 72, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Yunus, stating, “Heartiest felicitations to Professor Muhammad Yunus on his swearing-in as Chief Adviser of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Wishing him great success in guiding Bangladesh towards a harmonious and prosperous future. I look forward to working with him to deepen cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh in the days ahead.”

Yunus’s leadership is expected to usher in a new era of governance in Bangladesh, and Prime Minister Sharif’s remarks signal a strong intent to foster closer ties between the two neighboring South Asian nations.
