Malaysian court acquits wife of ex-PM Najib of money laundering and tax evasion
Malaysia’s High Court has acquitted Rosmah Mansor, the wife of jailed ex-Prime Minister Najib Razak, of 12 money laundering and five tax evasion charges. The court ruled the charges lacked sufficient legal grounds.
Rosmah expressed gratitude, calling the decision a victory for justice. However, her legal battles are far from over. She remains free on bail while appealing a 10-year prison sentence for bribery in connection to a $279 million solar power project during Najib’s tenure.
This development follows the recent dismissal of corruption charges against Najib due to procedural lapses. Despite Najib’s 2022 conviction for corruption linked to the 1MDB scandal, questions about the transparency of investigations and justice in high-profile cases persist.
The 1MDB scandal remains a sore point in Malaysian politics, with allegations of $4.5 billion embezzled through a global scheme between 2009 and 2014. Najib, who partially apologized for his role, continues to face multiple trials but has sought house arrest for his remaining sentence.
