Legal Challenges Mount Against Firewall Installation and Internet Shutdown in Pakistan
Legal battles have begun in Pakistan as applications challenging the installation of firewalls and the nationwide internet shutdown have been filed in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and Lahore High Court (LHC).
In Islamabad, the petitioner argued that the recent installation of firewalls has hindered access to social media networks, infringing on the fundamental rights of citizens. The application urges the court to ensure uninterrupted internet access across the country and to make any future firewall installations subject to consultation with relevant stakeholders. The cabinet secretary, secretary ITT, interior secretary, and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) have been named as parties in this case.
Simultaneously, a petition was lodged in the Lahore High Court against the nationwide internet shutdown, arguing that the abrupt disconnection of services has adversely affected businesses and daily life. The petitioner contends that the internet shutdown is unconstitutional and seeks a court order for the immediate restoration of services. The court is expected to address the significant economic and social impacts of this disruption in its hearing.
