Khaleda Zia Advocates for Youth Empowerment to Build a Modern and Prosperous Bangladesh

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has called on the nation to empower its youth to create a modern Bangladesh founded on peace, progress, and equality. In her first public speech in over six years, Khaleda emphasized the importance of constructing a society rooted in love, peace, and knowledge, rather than destruction and vengeance.

Addressing a BNP rally at Naya Paltan, Dhaka, via recorded video from Evercare Hospital, Khaleda spoke a day after her release from house arrest. She had been imprisoned in February 2018 on corruption charges and was recently pardoned by the president following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and flight from the country amidst a popular uprising. Reflecting on the recent student-led anti-discrimination movement, Khaleda highlighted the victory as a new beginning for Bangladesh. “We must build a prosperous Bangladesh from the ruins of democracy and corruption,” she declared. “Heroic students made the impossible possible through their struggle and sacrifices. I pay respect to the hundreds of martyrs.”

Khaleda stressed the necessity of a democratic Bangladesh grounded in merit, ability, and knowledge to fulfill the dreams of the youth who have fought for a better future. “A prosperous Bangladesh without exploitation should be built on human rights, social justice, and equality,” she added. Expressing gratitude for the support she received during her imprisonment, Khaleda said, “I thank Allah for allowing me to speak to you after being ill for a long time. During my imprisonment, you fought and prayed for my release from prison and disease. I thank you all for that.”

She acknowledged the struggle against what she termed a “fascist illegal government,” expressing sincere gratitude to the youth who achieved freedom through their relentless efforts. Khaleda concluded by emphasizing the need to ensure the rights of all religions and castes in the new Bangladesh.
