Germany Travel Chaos, Nationwide Airport Strikes Cancel Hundreds of Flights
Germany is experiencing major travel chaos as airport workers, led by the Verdi trade union, have launched a nationwide strike over pay disputes. The strike began unexpectedly at Hamburg Airport on Sunday and quickly expanded to major international hubs, including Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin.
Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s busiest, has urged passengers to avoid traveling, warning of severe disruptions to boarding and flight transfers. Munich Airport has also cautioned travelers about a significantly reduced flight schedule. Airlines, including Lufthansa, have confirmed widespread delays and cancellations.
According to German media reports, over 500,000 passengers have been affected, with thousands of flights being cancelled. Many travelers who had already checked in their luggage are now struggling to retrieve their belongings.
The Verdi trade union is demanding an 8% salary increase or a minimum raise of €350 per month, along with additional benefits and time off. However, employers have rejected these demands, calling them unaffordable. The strike has also extended to waste collection services in Berlin, Essen, and Kiel, where garbage remains uncollected for days.
Further strikes are expected this week in government and municipal sectors, adding to the growing tensions. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for Friday in Potsdam.
