Elon Musk Unveils ‘Colossus’ Supercomputer, Set to Rival OpenAI’s GPT-4

Elon Musk has unveiled ‘Colossus,’ a cutting-edge supercomputer developed by his AI startup, xAI. Musk claims that Colossus is “the most powerful AI training system in the world,” designed to compete directly with OpenAI’s GPT-4.

Located in Memphis, Colossus will be used to train xAI’s large language model, Grok-3. The introduction of Colossus marks a significant leap in AI technology, as it is anticipated to be one of the most formidable AI systems available. The launch is expected in December, adding to the excitement surrounding this ambitious project.

The development of Colossus comes amidst intense competition among tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, all vying to harness advanced AI capabilities. In line with this, Musk plans to acquire 50,000 of Nvidia’s new H200 chips, surpassing the current H100 models used in many AI projects.

An early beta version of Grok-2, which was trained on 15,000 Nvidia H100 chips, has already garnered recognition for its capabilities. Musk has committed to investing $3-4 billion in Nvidia hardware this year, benefiting both xAI and Tesla’s AI endeavors.

However, the project has raised environmental and logistical concerns in Memphis. Colossus will require up to 1 million gallons of water daily for cooling and could consume as much as 150 megawatts of power, placing a significant strain on the city’s resources.
